The location is a beautiful, exotic beach.

With white sand, sparkling saltwater, and hot bodied women wearing practically nothing, it appears to be the kind of beach you'd see featured in a high-class resort pamphlet.

Ryoji stands in the middle of it all in his yellow swim trunks, his usual cheerful smile looking even brighter than usual. Giving his attention briefly to two particularly busty young woman rubbing suntan lotion on each other, the young man winks at them.

"I think you missed a spot, ladies." The girls only giggle in response before returning to the rubdown.

Three beautiful women prancing up to him, Ryoji's eyes widen as they reach out to touch his arms lightly, trying to get his complete attention. "Come play volleyball with us, Ryoji-kun," the brunette coos at him. Nodding his head in agreement, the boy's grin suddenly falls from his face, his blue eyes narrowing at a dark figure standing a few feet away from him.

Minato Arisato stands opposite of Ryoji, his own harem of women at his side.

Ryoji takes his arm back from the girls next to him as he steps forward. "Give us room, ladies."

Pulling out an old, but classic game from nowhere, the dark-haired boy approaches his rival.

Ryoji's voice takes on a uncharacteristically somber tone. "Game. On."

[Background] In the world of Persona 3, at the chime of midnight there is an extra hour between 12:00am and 12:01am. This hour is called the Dark Hour and it is during this brief time period that humans remain frozen in place while monsters known only as Shadows come out to play. A few students of the local high school find that they are the only ones who are able to move around during the Dark Hour and they take it upon themselves to destroy the Shadows before they kill anymore people.

With Minato Arisato leading them, the group is able to save many people, eventually coming to fight and take down all twelve of the Arcana Shadows (which are pretty much just major boss fights that happen on the full moon). It is after they believe the world to be safe again that Ryoji makes his appearance in the game.

After the defeat of the twelve Arcana Shadows, a new student, Ryoji Mochizuki, is transferred to Gekkoukan High School into the eleventh grade classroom that the main character attends. Though he previously lived in this same city earlier in his childhood, he has been living overseas with his parents for the last ten years because of their work. With his cute looks and charming smile (oh yeah, and apparently he is rich), Ryoji manages to not only steal the school spotlight from both Minato and Aigis (the other new transfer kids), but he soon takes the trouble-making Junpei as his new best friend.

However, Aigis, a robot who assists the Main Character in his fight against Shadows, continuously claims that Ryoji is dangerous.

No one believes her.

Befriending the Main Character, Minato and Ryoji go on to have many fun times together, the most recent of them being the trouble they got into on the school trip. It is here that he will come into Somarium, during a very happy and lighthearted period of the game. However, though he has no knowledge of his true past yet, it is a very important part of him and concerns how his dreams will play out.

The truth behind who Ryoji actually is remains a secret presently to even him. Ryoji's real self is that of the Appriser of Nyx, who is essentially the mother of all Shadows. His true form is that of Thanatos, the embodiment of Death itself.

The Appriser's job is to usher in The Fall, the period in which Nyx will descend onto the earth with the intent and purpose of killing every single living creature on the planet. This is supposed to be Ryoji's job.

Ten years previous to the game's events, Ryoji (as Thanatos) appeared in the same town to bring about The Fall with Nyx. Aigis, the anti-Shadow weapon created to prevent just this, confronted him on a bridge during the Dark Hour. After an epic, but one-sided fight, Aigis used the last of her strength to seal Thanatos away before she ceased functioning. The host she choose as his seal turned out to be a six-year old Minato Arisato, the same boy who would return to lead against the fight against Shadows. Thanatos has been living inside of the young man for the last ten years, up until the point the twelve Arcana Shadows are destroyed.

It is at the point that Ryoji was 'created'. Appearing into the world with false memories of a past he never lived, the incarnation of Death has no idea that he isn't a normal teenage boy. Even though Shadows are mindless beings because of the ten years he spent with Minato, Ryoji was born with strong emotions and desires, making him easily pass as a human.

Because I can't fit this in anywhere else, it should also be said that at the beginning of the game and throughout it until the twelve Arcana Shadows are defeated, Minato forms a relationship with a young boy named Pharos. This boy is the Ryoji/Thanatos that lives within the Main Character. He is the reason that Ryoji is born with human emotions and memories.

[Personality] Though Thanatos is a mindless and uncaring Shadow, due to the relationship and time spent together between Pharos and Minato, Ryoji is 'born' with emotions.

Ryoji can be best described as cheerful. There are very few times the young man will ever let the smile on his face disappear. From getting rejected by girls to failing tests he didn't bother to study for, Ryoji tends to smile and laugh everything off.

Ryoji is also quite the ladies man. Within the first week of school, he has already asked out a large majority of the female students. He can and will flirt with each and every girl he sees. However, Ryoji is completely under the 'bros before hos' oath. He cherishes each of his friends and would gladly do anything to keep them as cheerful as he usually stays.

Despite his seemingly endless supply of smiles and laughs, there is a very serious side to Ryoji as well. After December 2, when he finds out about who he really is, the boy breaks down. His voice becomes shaky and small sobs catch in his throat.

Even though he is not a human himself, he loves all of humankind and doesn't wish to see them perish. He apologizes over and over again for The Fall which he knows cannot be avoided. It is then that he gives the Main Character a choice. Telling Minato to take his life, Ryoji offers up that if he dies, though The Fall cannot be stopped, the people of the world will live peacefully and not suffer until that time comes. Suffering is the one thing he doesn't want to see the people he calls friends go through.

Though this Ryoji is from an earlier time, he would still feel just as strongly if he had to deal with death/suffering in Somarium.

[Specialties/Abilities] This pre-Thanatos Ryoji doesn't have many abilities. He's just a fun-loving, girl-chasing, normal teenage boy.

His only real ability is that he is a STUD.

[Other Facts] ~~Minato totally banged Ryoji against the headboard on New Year's Eve.~~

It should be noted that Ryoji and Minato not only have the same basic appearance, but the same voice actor as well.
